Child P1 (18 year old female):
Family P: again, please forgive the lack of personalization. Part of what I have loved about Brunch With A Purpose is using the children's real first names. However, Brunch has grown so much and we're helping some small counties so it would be too obvious to list their real names and I have to protect their confidentiality.
Child P1 lives in a youth shelter because her mother's parental rights were terminated. Termination of parental rights is the most drastic thing we do in dependency and neglect cases and is only done if the parent is unable to parent his/her child and fails at the treatment plan. She has recently been initiating contact with her mother (who lives out of state) in a therapeutic context. When her caseworker asked her what she would most like for Christmas, she said, "I want to see my mom." The caseworker said that it's absolutely not appropriate for a visit to happen. But, we can help out with her other items on the wish list. The caseworker asked the child where she would like to go clothes shopping and she had absolutely no idea where she could go. It's really fairly pitiful. But, the caseworker is taking her out to lunch and shopping to pick out things together.
Child P1's Wish List:
clothes
ipod
hair products
